TOP TIPS FOR STAYING COOL THIS SUMMER
Don't let the sun strike the glass
The best way to stop your house from heating up is to stop the sun from
striking your windows. By using retractable shade cloths, awnings and
blinds outside your windows can block a lot of the suns radiant
heat. Think about planting trees and vines to shade your home in summer.
Reduce heat gain
Good window tinting can block at least 50% of the heat entering your
home through windows. Tinting works most effectively on the west and north/east sides of your home. Tinting along with thick, backed
curtains can block a further 25% of the heat from your windows. Keep
the curtains closed as much as practicable during the day.
Seal out hot draughts
Air leaking into and out of your house brings heat with it. Ensure you
plug up the draughty spots in your home - this will help in winter too!
Doors, windows and chimneys are common places to start.
Insulate yourself
Having your roof and walls insulated will stop the heat from coming in - it will also keep the warmth in during winter.
Night Purge
During the day the air is generally quite hot - so close up all doors
and windows. However once the sun sets there is often a cool breeze -
take full advantage of it! Open up all the doors and windows - all
night long if possible - to drop the temperature in your house for
free!
