Computer wire through ducting? - 2007/09/04 15:19 You probably have never had this question. We want to install cat6 wiring to be able to network computers in our house. We have a Heat Pump system with 10" tube ducting. Is there any reason we should not route our computer wiring through a length of duct (supply side)? A computer person thought it might disrupt the flow of air. It is only a 1/4 in wire in a 10 inch tube.??
Thanks for any help.

Re:Computer wire through ducting? - 2007/09/06 04:29 Interesting question. The airflow would not be disrupted, however the temperature inside the duct may cause an issue. Most gas ducted heaters deliver around 40-60 C of heat, so as long as your cables can withstand that - go for it would be my advice!

Re:Computer wire through ducting? - 2007/09/19 17:37 Hi There,

I'd be concerned that the ducting itself may cause issue with the signal over the twister pair cable. Especially if the ducting itself goes anywhere near mains wiring for example - ie induction issues on your unshielded cabling.

On the other hand... it may simply act as a hollow conducter... ie shield, to protect the signal...

Given you're looking at cat 6 (and not, say, cat 5 or 5e) it sounds like you're looking for gigabit performance - so maybe do it "by the book" and avoid any variables. Will you be getting the cabling properly tested once you've installed it, or will you just use it and see if it works?

If you do go ahead with it, I'd love to hear how you go!

Cheers!
